"Seasonal Singers": 14.05.14

The business part of the meeting gave us updates on some recent events that members have attended:

Gosforth Synagogue
This visit took place earlier today and all members said that it was a fabulous day, with very interesting information received.  The only minor wrinkle was that during the whole of the visit the members were not offered a drink/cup of tea once - tea and the WI go together like bread and jam!  Apparently, this may have been down to the rather complicated kitchen arrangements that had to be adhered to within the synagogue and so we all forgave them this minor oversight.  After the synagogue there was a delicious meal, followed by a visit to Mowbray Gardens, which were described as "lovely" by everyone.

Behind the Scenes at the Dorman Museum
This visit took place on 30.04.14 and those who attended were positively ecstatic at their experience!  They were able to see design book by Christopher Dresser and also a tour of the storage rooms, showing the vast Linthorpe Pottery collection - the biggest in the world.  As they were guided through the storage rooms, our ladies noticed a table in the centre of the room with various items on it, which had been in the process of being cleaned but were now left there.  They asked about this and were advised that the museum employees simply did not have the time to properly clean the exhibits and therefore have to rely on trained volunteers.  Our ladies left on this immediately and volunteered their services!  They therefore attend tomorrow (15.05.14) to meet with the Conservator who will train them in the proper (and careful!) cleaning of antiques - and they will then be able to attend on a regular basis (of their own choosing) to care for and covet these invaluable items of our local history!

Annual Federation Quiz
This also took place on 30.04.14 and was extremely well attended.  Linthorpe WI entered two teams - both of which came 'joint bottom'.  Apparently to say that the quiz was "very hard" would be an understatement.  Enough said about that......We are still extremely proud of our ladies for attending and taking part!

Whilst all of this we had a minor emergency occurring in the background as one of the ladies on tea duty for this evening had forgotten to bring the biscuits!  This is the WI!!  Think of the disgrace of tea without biscuits!  Thankfully she was able to surreptitiously send an emergency text to her husband, who valiantly screeched into the car park in his little white van clutching a packet each of ginger biscuits and fruit shorties.  The hero of the moment!!!

Then it was time to enjoy the delights of "The Seasonal Singers".  We had  "Lili Marleen" and the hauntingly beautiful "Will I See Thee More", their own WI song, hilarious renditions of "Dear M&S" and "My Grandfather's Ferret" (to the tune of My Grandfather's Clock).  They finished off with some good old rock & roll to have the ladies jumping in their seats!
